Prior to our Mighty 5 Trip to Utah, I met this amazing landscape and dance photographer on social media. His name is Casey Grimley, and when I saw his work on Instagram, I instantly knew I had to work with him.
If you know me personally, you would know that my first love is dance.
Dancing and exploring the great outdoors serve as my two outlets in life, and having such great passion for both makes me feel like I am living two different worlds. I love the balance between them. Dance life for me is fast paced, with competitions and performances here and there; while going on hikes or exploring nature gives me the pause I need, especially when I just want life to be calm and peaceful.
When I saw Casey’s Dancing With The Stars portfolio, I knew it was the perfect way to merge both of my passions. I contacted him right away and asked where he was based, and when he said “Utah” I didn’t even think twice anymore, I immediately told my husband I was going to do the shoot when we visit Utah, whatever happens.
We did the shoot in Zion National Park, and it was definitely an experience I will never forget! The goal was to get a couple of shots while the sun was setting, and another one with the Milky Way. It was a good thing that the sunset was at 9pm and not earlier, because we had to stay on location until the Milky Way appeared (which was around 1:00am).
Getting the shots with the Milky Way was a bit tricky. Casey needed to do long exposures, and I was required to hold poses for about 5-10 seconds each, in the dark, so the camera could capture the stars behind me. At the end of the night, I was left with really bad pole burns. It was definitely worth it though!
My husband Dx was there to help out, too. He was actually in charge of throwing the fabric up, so it would look ‘flowy‘ in the shots. I’d say, with how these images turned out, he did such a great job!
The three of us had a blast. We may have struggled with sprinklers, skunks, bats flying into me while I was hanging on the pole in the dark, and a lot of other mishaps, but all those just added more fun to our session. It definitely kept the night interesting. Lol!
What a memorable first-ever pole photo shoot this was for me. After 2 years of training, I finally have my first set of pole dance photos for my portfolio! This will definitely not be the last. Looking forward to having more outdoor dance photography, be it on the pole or not. I think it is such a great combination, and it best depicts who I am as a person.
To Casey Grimley, thank you so much for this incredible experience. You are one talented photographer, and I am blessed to have met you!
